Gucci and SuperRare look ahead to “The Next 100 Years”

Beginning in 1921 as an artisanal leather and luggage workshop in Florence before expanding into an international fashion house, Gucci’s 100-year history has been defined by transformation as it forever looks to the intersection of culture, fashion, art, music, and film. Today, we find Gucci again on the threshold of making fashion history as it unveils theThe Next 100 Years NFT art exhibit, on display in their virtual gallery created in partnership with SuperRare, Vault Art Space. In the wake of the House’s centennial, under the Creative Direction of Alessandro Michele, and President and Chief Executive Marco Bizzarri, we see Gucci again leaning into cutting-edge technologies that are informed by broader movements in the art world, while also embracing visionary concepts like their presence in the metaverse.

“The Next 100 Years” exhibition showcases 29 handpicked artists whose work reflects the House’s storied heritage and offers a blueprint for what comes next. Each artwork incorporates a unique perspective on the House’s history, where it is today, and what visions the artists have for it in the future. The work varies from artist to artist. Emerging talents include Alanna Vanacore, Alex Trochut, Alexis Christodoulou, Aliendope, ALIENQUEEN, Aliina Kauranne, An Chen, Antoni Tudisco, Dārta Katrīna, Drew Young, Diberkato, eBoy, Ellen Sheidlin, Ignasi Monreal, Ignorance1, Jordan Schiffer, Kris Andrew Small, loudsqueak, , Merijn Hos & Jurriaan Hos, Paulina Almira, Pet Liger, Sasha Katz, Tim Maxwell, Tyler Spangler, trs.mnz, Trouble Andrew (Gucci Ghost), VEXX, and YEAHYEAHCHLOE.

Infinite Gateway (Tyler Spangler, 2022)

Behind Alessandro Michele’s vision of Gucci, “Vault Art Space” aims to empower emerging talent, infinitely extending the House’s storyline. As Nicolas Oudinot, EVP of New Business at Gucci and CEO of Vault, says, “The House has always had a deep connection with art, especially under Creative Director Alessandro Michele as he pushes the boundaries of the Gucci narrative to include ever-diverse points of view. As we venture further into the Web3 realm, Vault Art Space naturally expresses this facet of Gucci’s heritage in an experimental and contemporary way.”

The NFT artwork’s first drop was June 23rd, and will total three drops throughout July.

GG Quartet (Aliina Kauranne, 2022)

Furthering their dedication to the future of digital art, Gucci has invested in an allocation of SuperRare’s $RARE token, giving them a voice in the governance and direction of the platform. SuperRare envisions the $RARE token as a future “curation token for the internet”, with token holders steering the direction of digital, NFT art. Adding to the list of $RARE token holders a brand so indispensable to the definition of style is a monumental leap forward in that mission.

“The Next 100 Years” is an ongoing exhibition. Check out the artworks on the VAULT Art Gallery here.

#TheGoldStandard, a historic show for AAPI artists

#TheGoldStandard, a historic show for AAPI artists

#TheGoldStandard, a historic show for AAPI artists

Earlier this year, the SuperRare team invited me to curate an art show celebrating AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage) month.  It would be a historic show, the first ever exhibition dedicated to showcasing the work of Asian American artists on a major NFT platform.  I chose the name #TheGoldStandard as a reference to Asian skin, art history, heritage but also to excellence, and of course–to the roots of cryptocurrencies (and crypto art) as thenew gold.’  My goal: to spotlight the vast yet somehow invisible contributions of Asian American artists in the digital art world.

We can find the roots of this invisibility in the severe under-representation of Asian Americans within the overall cultural landscape of America.  The numbers are staggering.   A recent survey of a diversely sampled group in the U.S. found that 42% of those asked were unable to name a single prominent living Asian-American.  Top responses included a dead person and a foreigner.  The bamboo ceiling is real.  Take a look at Forbes’ list of the top 100 highest paid people in entertainment.  There is only one actor with AAPI heritage, “The Rock” (whose mother is Samoan and whose father is Black Nova Scotian).  Zero Asian American women.  No East Asian American men.

In the “analog” institutional art world, the representation of Asian Americans has been historically abysmal.  It is plainly obvious that we are under-represented by simply glancing at the name plates at the major museums.  My informal review of the 5,194 American artists in the MoMa collection uncovered the level of Asian American artists to be at around 1%, which is 7x lower than our share of the US population.  Remarkably, for all the recent abundance of diversity research, no academic paper has made an effort to quantify our representation in major US museums.  It is an issue that I have recently raised with leading academic voices for art representation and diversity.

But it is not just the museums.  In the top 100 auction results for the most recent year I could find (2019), there are zero Asian American artists. So I cannot help but agree with the Founding Co-director of the Asian American Art Initiative at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, Aleesa Pitchamarn Alexander, who writes “Asian American art has been undervalued in almost every major arena of the art world.  A verifiable injustice.

Moving forward from the legacy, analog art world to tech art.  Asian American artists have been the backbone of digital creativity for decades: from pushing visual technology to its limits in Hollywood special effects, to building virtual worlds for top gaming experiences, to advancing the frontier of technology art.  Asian Americans have played a critical role in turning the best-known digital franchises into household names—yet, again, while toiling in the shadows.  Now, as crypto art and NFTs liberate artists, armies of incredible talent are claiming their sovereign artistic identities along with their Asian heritage.

So that’s why I was so excited when SuperRare reached out to me about doing this show.  Yet, I faced a challenge: how to live up to such a show’s potential.  I quickly gave up on the idea for comprehensiveness—given the diversity and volume of voices, it would be futile!  Instead, I put together a curation that is idiosyncratic, unabashedly personal, and hopefully—thought-provoking and stimulating for the viewer.

#TheGoldStandard collection features nine artworks from prominent Asian-American artists, ranging from rising stars in the NFT space to scientists and researchers who are pushing the frontier of what is technically possible in crypto to veterans of some of the world’s leading special effects houses in the entertainment industry, to art entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley.  All works are on exhibit and available for purchase during the month of May on SuperRare exclusively.

Ani Liu is an internationally exhibiting research-based artist working at the intersection of art & science.  Her work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale (Architecture Biennale 2021), the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the MIT Museum, and MIT Media Lab.  I selected her artwork Shapes and Ladders: Battles of Bias & Bureaucracy, a video game that shows how systemic racism and sexism are embedded in insidious ways in the workplace. Set in the metaphor of a career ladder, players attempt to navigate through an office building rife with challenges.

Shapes and Ladders: Battles of Bias & Bureaucracy by Ani Liu

Formally an illustrator, Billy Dinh has an eye for capturing the world in a dynamic way. He documents moments of everyday life and finds the beauty in the usual in his photos, which he presents as almost stills from something out of a movie or a dream. Billy’s work has been exhibited in both the USA and Europe.  I selected his photograph Undecided, which captures a young man as he weaves through the sea of people to make his way on to a train.

Curry Sicong Tian is a multidisciplinary filmmaker who has held various roles including director, concept/digital artist, 3d mographer, fashion photographer, and creative director at studios internationally.  She is aiming to bridge the gap between eastern and western culture, video art and film and has worked with clients like Mercedes Benz, Apple BEATS, Canon and Coachella.  I selected her artwork Illuminate the Void which Curry describes as a profound reverie, “lodged in nebulae.”

Michael Yamashita has shot for the National Geographic for 40 years, combining his dual passions of travel and photography. An Asian Studies major at Wesleyan University and fluent in Japanese, Yamashita has followed his roots to become a Far East expert. In addition to his work throughout Asia, which has included intensive concentrations in China, Japan, Korea and India, his assignments have taken him to six continents.  I selected his photograph Healing Waters of Takaragawa.  Takaragawa onsen has an ancient history, dating back to prehistoric times, and through the years the curative effects of the waters from its thermal hot springs have drawn visitors who come to bathe in the open-air rotenburo throughout the year. In the fall they are surrounded by the rich golds and reds of autumn foliage, reflected in the healing waters.

Reuben Wu is a multi-disciplinary artist working in photography, motion and music.  Reuben’s work is in the permanent collection of the Guggenheim, The Met, RawDAO and FlamingoDAO, and his clients include Apple, Audi, VW and Samsung. He is also a Phase One Global Ambassador and a photographer for National Geographic Magazine.  The notion of journey and discovery is central to Wu’s art, bound with his love for new technology and the opportunities it brings to modern storytelling.  I selected his artwork, Somewhere, Something Incredible Is Waiting To Be Known (LN2938) from the Lux Noctis series, an ongoing project depicting landscapes unbound by time and space, influenced by ideas of planetary exploration, chiaroscuro painting, and science fiction.

Te Hu is an award-winning CG artist, a veteran of Industrial Light & Magic and Electronic Arts and currently at Pixar. He was honored with the ADC 100th Gold award and the only Gold award of the Japan illustration Contest 2022.  He has created art for acclaimed video games like Dead Space 3 and Battlefield, and the Oscar-winning CARNE y ARENA and award winning Vadar Immortal Series.  I selected his artwork raijin_and_fujin.  This painting was inspired by the ancient Japanese gods of thunder and wind, using programmed procedural techniques to simulate the clouds and to mimic a traditional gold etching technique.

Weidi Zhang is a new media artist and researcher. Her media art research and practices investigate A Speculative Assemblage at the intersection of immersive media design, experimental data visualization, and interactive AI art. Currently, she is a Ph.D. candidate in the Media Arts and Technology Program and a graduate researcher in Experimental Visualization Lab at UC Santa Barbara.  I selected her artwork, Astro::CityJungle07, part of her Astro audiovisual series work that unfolds our earth through the lens of an intelligent being in outer space to raise the question ‘why explore space’?  This work is created using an algorithmic approach combining data visualization of cityscape and machine learning generative visuals.

Xin Liu is an artist and engineer.  She is the Arts Curator in the Space Exploration Initiative in MIT Media Lab, a member of the inaugural ONX studio program founded by New Museum and Onassis NY and Silver Arts Project in the World Trade Center. She is also an artist-in-residence in SETI Institute.  I selected her artwork, The Last Tooth. In 2019, she sent her tooth to outer space, carried by a crystalline robotic sculpture.

Vitruvian Woman #TheGoldStandard

is a creation of Drue Kataoka Studios in collab with Concept Art House.  It reimagines Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian man as a woman in a sea of gold, under gold skies. I chose to partner with Concept Art House, a leading digital art studio with over 13 years of history in the gaming and digital entertainment arenas. A portion of the proceeds from the sales will benefit Asian Health Services.

“The Nightsong”

Edition 1 of 1

I used to have night terrors in my 20s, startled from sleep by the idea of death.
When we are awake, our brain shields us from our mortal truth by refusing to link our self with it.
Death is something that happens to others, not to us.
Waking up too quickly for this primal mechanism to kick in left me to staring right at my own mortality. Things have gotten easier since then. The night terrors eventually wore off, but death keeps teasing me.
It’s the bad joke at a party you’re trying to laugh off, but it follows you home and pesters you. The bittersweet ending to that long awaited holiday, the bad cherry on top of your cake.
I keep asking myself. What to do when there’s no stopping a train you’re already on? And I keep telling myself.
Hold on tightly, let go lightly. Hold on tightly, let go lightly. Hold on tightly, let go lightly.

“21st Century Rage”

Edition 1 of 1

Mike Szpot aka illkoncept is a New York City based artist who specializes in documentary, street, and urban photography. Mike is a storyteller whose work evocatively sheds light on beauty in the mundane and fleeting moments often overlooked by others. Routinely walking miles on end combing the streets, ill captures scenes resembling a surrealistic movie. A sense of nostalgia also emanates from his art influenced by an older, grittier New York. “INCEPTION”

Edition 1 of 1

“Inception” is the first installment of illkoncept’s Illusions series.
This image was shot in Chicago, IL entirely in-camera by using the reflective glass bottom of a skybridge.
Illusions is a series that provokes viewers to slow down, think outside the box, and question the way they look at things.
All of us ultimately live in an illusion where our perspective determines our reality, and no two realities are the same.
Using reflections of glass and puddles, this series creates candid optical illusions around urban settings that leave viewers questioning which direction is even right-side up.

Lorenzo Quinn is a leading figurative sculptor whose work is inspired by masters such as Michelangelo, Bernini and Rodin. Exhibited internationally, his monumental public art and smaller, more intimate pieces transmit his passion for eternal values and authentic emotions. He is best known for expressive recreations of human hands. ‘The hand has been the basis for humanity’s evolution and holds the power to communicate, to give, to receive, to love, to hate, to create and to destroy’.

Lorenzo Quinn who has always felt the need to promote universal peace and dialogue.
In an effort to demonstrate that actions are louder than words, the Artist will donated the totality of the profits of this NFT sale to three charities all of whom are doing instrumental work to support civilians and medics;
The Ukrainian Red Cross Society, Nova Ukraine and Sunflower for Peace.
Each NFT represents the value of the individual contributions made to fight for peace via unique dust particles, adding to the collections rarity.
This powerful work is also inspired by Lorenzo Quinn’s iconic ‘Support’ installation first unveiled at the Venice Biennale in 2017 to raise awareness about rising sea levels that threaten Venice and all coastal cities around the world.

Teenagers from Mars
Edition 1 of 1
In the year of 2666, humans have found a way to survive on the red planet.
There, they are still doing terraform process by blowing up nuclear bombs as many as possible.
Unexpectedly, they find a treasure in the underground of the red planet.
And to be able to take it, they need a lot of human resources.
So, they have a plan to take the teenagers on Earth to help them find the treasure.
Earth is already too messed up!
For that reason they offer a bright future on the red planet.
But the future isn’t always bright.
After arriving there, Mars is still like hell and
the teenagers will only be enslaved. Some teenagers are forced to follow all their orders.
And some teenagers escape to a town called
Solis Planum, a dead city with giant skull monuments and blood-red rivers.
That’s where the teenagers hide, commit suicide,
have fun and plan for their revenge.

Majestic Voyage
Edition 1 of 1
In life, we are not often granted moments that stop you in your place,
to admire the beauty of what you’re seeing.
It’s been said that humans and whales have strong
similarities which is why we develop lasting
connections viewing these pinnacles of the ocean.
Humpbacks make one of the longest animal
migrations known to man, and they do so without
fail every single year. In the summertime, the
humpbacks gather down south in the chilly Arctic
waters, where they feed plentifully on krill.
This is their feeding season and readies
them for the journey ahead to give birth.
Each year, I travel 2 hours to the ocean in the
hope of witnessing them travel up the Pacific
during their northern migration along the coastline.
On this occasion, I spotted what appeared to be
a small pod of humpbacks, several kilometres
out to sea. I hastily launched my drone out
towards the sprays and was left completely
speechless by what I was witnessing.
A pod of 5 whales gracefully travelling as one,
in the clearest waters of the deep that I had
ever filmed. All the years of patiently waiting
had culminated into this one moment, as the
leader of the pod came up for a single breath
of fresh air, before diving into the depths below.
When I flew the drone back, I was numb with
satisfaction from the footage I had captured.
A truly surreal moment to be fully immersed i
n the beauty of nature. Due to the 50 mb upload

Born in NYC in the 1940’s, Lawrence has lived through & documented the evolution of life(styles) in the city. Wanting to build upon his psychedelic experiences in the East Village in ’67, he bought a camera in ’73 & began using infrared film & crystalline filters to create new perspectives on the American landscape. After completing the iconic project in ’86, he stored the work for nearly four decades. By releasing them now, he hopes to inspire new analog awareness within digital culture.

Heavenly Chords
Edition 1 of 1
The speed of light slows to the speed of sound.
As the energy expands over time, the blue aura
thickens, becoming the site for the celestial
archetypes of Heaven. In this psychedelic
tableau of Heavenly Harmony, a female
angel and her twin generate mesmerizing
prismatic sound waves. The black triangular
center echoes the black void of the Cosmic Golden
Egg as a complete example of energy regeneration.
This visionary experimental series — fusing
analog and digital mediums — focuses on singular
images which cross multiple structural,
chromatic, and psychic planes of attunement.
By digitally folding and unfolding the image,
the process allows viewers the opportunity to
have deeper and more refined optical experiences
of Nature and urban architecture as sacred
realities. The auratic colors, emergence of
meditative geometry, and crystalized primal
vibrations may help open the viewer’s “third eye”
by uncovering a living connection between
consciousness and waves of complex solar energies. This digital fold was chosen to explore and expand

Therapy
Edition 1 of 1
A celebration of the beautiful herb
that is known as weed. I wanted to
portray Marijuana in a beautiful light,
unlike how society sees it. I took
inspiration from fine artists like Klimt
and Van Gogh and combined it with
contemporary taste to create a fine
“weed art”. Art is my therapy– just like
weed– and I hope to have captured
the tranquil solace I myself and many
others find in celebrating its beautiful
process.

“Statera”

I pay great attention to symbolism, it helps me build my ideas. In this artwork, I would like to show the strength we all have inside of us. Like a Genkgo branch, the only vegetal which survived the Hiroshima nuclear attack, we have the abiltty to go on despite the turbulence.

Art walks the rope between object and digital media, is inspired by the nature of exquisite patterns that satisfy the whim for detail and harmony of color, remains firm as a tribute to modernity that has left us as a legacy the possibility and expansion, its referents are the term expanded space in the 1960s that opens a new culture, a tool and space without limits, you see a project enraptured by it now, life in surreal spaces and decentralized spaces, the revolution of value and mutual action.

“Vines”

“DO US APART”
Edition 1 of 1
New York City 2020, none of us expected to be where we were at the time.  The world shut down and everything was f ozen in time.  I downloaded Uber eats app registered as a driver and took my camera along for my delivery’s.  At the time it was the only way to be on the streets without getting a ticket.  (police definitely pulled me over a few times to see if I was authorized to be outside)  While delivering food in Chinatown I noticed an older couple sitting on a bench, holding hands just looking into the sky at a beautiful apocalyptic sunset.  No face mask, no emotions.  Just a blank look into the unknown.  I pulled the car over, ran across the street and positioned myself behind them.  I framed my shot held my breath and as my finger pressed down on the shutter, magic happened before my eyes.  With a single shot all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place.  A flock of birds entered my frame and a mysterious hooded person added that extra feeling of emotion I needed.  At that moment I knew I’ve just captured my favorite photo ever taken.  During these times, people made sacrifices  They made changes and they relied on one another to prevail.  It was as if they were ready for the end. It’s times like these when we need each other the most.

“Reincarnation 1”
Edition 1 of 1
The artist takes forms and things that are simple and understandable to everyone,  and shows them with the eyes of a naive child,  not being afraid of bright colors and miraculous lines. According to the artist:  The world through the eyes of a child through rose-colored glasses.  This is a special vision of the world. Children are surprised at things and events that we pass by  without noticing; are fascinated by colors,  sounds and words in which we do not find anything special.  They have different scales, different values, different
understanding of what is important and unimportant.

“Nintendo Nostalgia”
Edition 1 of 1
Visual Toy™ tribute to the Nintendo console. From Massive Console Nostalgia Collection Consoles are for my magic items that I used to enjoy very little.  My parents were against this type of entertainment, I had a clone of the Nintendo (NASA) very popular in Spain in the 80’s and they left me very little time to play, very very little.  The rest of the video game consoles and video games could only be played at friends’  houses for a while without my parents knowing.  That is why they are an object of desire for me,  something unattainable.  This work is a reconciliation with that desire, a memory and perhaps a  way to finally have those consoles, close that longing. —- In our era, nostalgia walks its own paths, consoles and video
games being a trip to our childhood or youth.  These consoles and their most popular video games represent
a magical place that we know well, a safe and warm place in our memory.  The artist also intends to elevate the console to a key artistic and cultural object of the late twentieth century.  This Visual Toy mixes all this with the unique style of the artist
to create a new and unknown functioning object.  A classic Visual Toy unique to the artist with all his imaginative power.  The original big size file Mp4.  6568px 3696px will be send exclusive to the collector.
