GΞNΞSIS by Don Diablo

For my GΞNΞSIS (1 of 1) piece I wanted to create something truly unique. This NFT is a magical combination of three elements: an unreleased song + a holographic synthesizer…and it comes with a physical hand built hologram cabinet + cartridge to display the art in a truly unique way in your living room. I started working on this particular song at the beginning of my career in 2001. Since then I have continued working on it every single year. I must have spent over 250 hours in total on the song and never found the right purpose or timing to share it with the world, up until now. The animation of the hologram synthesizer is based on the very first keyboard I bought as a kid, to make things truly full circle. The idea for the hexagon hologram cabinet (HEXAGRAM) and the cartridge derives from my love for both Star Wars as well as old school Nintendo gaming consoles. My genesis piece is nostalgia mixed with my vision for the future of digital art and music.

It’s Complicated.

It’s complicated. A one-word poem about the most complex of all emotions. This piece introduced motion into my work, allowing words to shift between different shapes and stages in order to tell a story. The piece not only compels you to read an image, but also to see its transformation as its own short narrative. Playing with this intersection of subjective and objective legibility has become the focus of many new projects I’m currently developing for future release. /// I’m committing 10% of my gross sale of these works to Carbon180, a climate nonprofit working to create a world that removes more carbon than it emits.

A circling robot above the altiplano sand dunes of Siloli. This image is from my series “Lux Noctis”, an ongoing project depicting landscapes unbound by time and space, influenced by ideas of planetary exploration, chiaroscuro painting, and science fiction. By attaching a light to a drone, and tracing precise geometric shapes above remote landscapes at night, my work offers a new perspective, showing familiar places but under an unfamiliar light. The series was shortlisted at the 2020 Sony World Photography Awards and the eponymous book of the project has since been acquired by the Guggenheim, the Met Museum, and the MoMA. From the proceeds of this sale, I will donate a portion to the National Parks Conservation Association in an effort to reduce ecological impact, and The AAPI Community Fund to #StopAsianHate.

The first angel is Gaderel. ⠀ Gaderel was cast down from Heaven to Earth by higher powers, and froze in the atmosphere during the dramatic moment of the triumph of some Gods over others. We decided to move away from the existing religious overtones and create our own story, changing both the looks of the characters and their characters, but preserving the eternal concept of the struggle between Good and Evil, Light and Dark. All angels will be released this year as collection. In collaboration between artists Pokras Lampas & Melnukoff.

A new musical work paired with an animation + Interactive NFT : The collector gets to finish the title with a mutually agreeable name/phrase after the auction. If you’re the collector, it will go live on Bandcamp, Soundcloud, and other music platforms with your chosen finished phrase. When the art gets resold, so will the naming rights. The music was a joyous but laborious process, recording Trumpet, Euphonium, Piano, Tuba, Clarinet, Zurna, percussion, and chopping them all up into intricate samples.This piece took about 100 hours to create. The result is a funky, global affair, with some musical easter eggs to discover. I recently put out a 14 track album “Osmanity” – this is the unreleased 15th track, with a spin. The visual is a collaboration with Dylan Casano, a brilliant digital designer. His career is really starting to blow up and we sort of came up together over the last few years. Fun fact: we actually met randomly being neighbors in the same apartment building. After countless late nights talking about the nature of art, music and society, we knew we’d be working together for a long time to come.

First explored to further emphasize his destructive approach to creation, Vhils’ work with explosives should be seen as a natural progression from his original bas-relief carving technique used on walls. According to Vhils, walls retain within their layers something of the history and essence of the city which can be symbolically exposed when he carves through them. By employing explosive charges to reveal these portraits and compositions, Vhils takes this concept to its logical conclusion. This original technique was first employed in 2010 for the Detritos (Detritus) series of art videos as a visual metaphor for the social and economic volatility brought on by the 2008 global financial crisis. As such, both this and the subsequent series speak of how, at times of turmoil, the veneer of civilization we take for granted can easily explode and bring forth previously tamed expressions of intolerance, extremism, and violence that simmer beneath the surface. As the entire process is not only eruptive but also fast and dramatic, its result can only be truly appreciated on video. Most of these have been shot using a high-speed digital camera which enables the artist to capture the moment at a very low speed that seems to almost freeze the flying debris, creating a slow-motion poetic intensity conducive to reflection.

With Neverland, the aim was to capture the beauty and mystical nature of the iconic windmills found in the Netherlands. This piece incorporates my trademark surreal twist with the floating island and is one of the leading pieces in my Enter The Mind series, with this piece exploring my feelings following my visit to the Netherlands in December of 2019. The name an obvious play on the Netherlands and the phrase to ‘never land’, to live in your blissful euphoric state above ground and never give up that beautiful feeling.

Minted from the original as a unique NFT, this is the OG Astro. Rendered as a looping video, it captures an astronaut in a slow motion tumble through space, musing on the isolation and solitude of the artist’s practice.

This NFT is a delusion borne of an amalgamation of intense desire and paranoia in the mind of Sarah Kane, who was the cult British playwright of the 90s. Likely one of the most provocative NFT artworks minted on SuperRare, “Mushroom Field” is part of the “Psychosis” series, originally conceived as a video stage design for a theatre production reinterpreting Sarah Kane’s “4:48 Psychosis” at Electrotheatre Stanislavsky in Moscow. The NFT’s Verisart certificate includes access to the preview of the full 18-minute “Psychosis” video, which the artists have not shared with the public. AES+F is a collective of four Russian artists (T. Arzamasova, L. Evzovich, E. Svyatsky, and V. Fridkes) with studios in Berlin, New York, and Moscow. The group was founded as AES in 1987 and evolved to AES+F with the addition of Fridkes in 1995. They define their practice as a “social psychoanalysis” through which they explore and reveal the deeply-rooted values, vices, and conflicts within contemporary global culture.

It is a short story written entirely by Sirena V.032021, the first neural network and natural language processing (NLP) model Chan programmed and trained. The Borgesian like story is told through a looped sequence of QR codes. Physically impossible sexual positions, gender dysphoria, tense disagreements, and a peculiar correlation between the perverse and the divine are featured in Southern Interior. Such sentiments are typically treated as “noise” in NLP research and corporate machine learning sectors. Here, it is the only signal that matters.
