By tradition the best times for seeing fairies are twilight and midnight when the moon is full. It is sometimes said that fairies are seen only in the twinkling of an eye, or between the blinking of the next, though for fairies themselves a single second is long enough for a myriad of things to happen. Visitors to the garden have a completely opposite experience which, feels like merely minutes or hours have passed; only to find they’ve woken up years later.

I am the founder of the Techism movement (my 2014 manifesto is online). I believe Art + technology can be good for us—to uplift and enlighten humanity. Art on screens can heal and this has been my intention since I created my thesis in 2013. Meditation is scientifically proven to improve our well-being, and as a meditator, I started a journey creating visceral, meditative, healing art using the light emitting from our digital screens as a medium. I want to create a digital experience of meditation and healing. I am on a mission to help us heal through the power of art. Our world needs it, and the pandemic has made it very clear. This work is part of our series “Circular Ruins”, itself stemming from “Potential Herbariums”, a wide array of generative works derived from GANs. These models were trained on more than 4 million herbariums gathered worldwide. Inspired by a short story by Jorge Luis Borges as well as “Atlas of Remote Islands”, a book by Judith Schalansky, we used the GAN-generated shapes of a fascinating -and somewhat impossible- vegetal to create a 3D landscape, a imaginary remote island to be explored.
